Arrowtown is such a cute town. It’s a historic gold mining town about 20 minutes drive from Queenstown. I ended up going there three of four times while I was in the South Island.
Wandering around it feels a bit like you’re in an old western movie. The first time I was there I stopped for lunch at Postmasters. They have a delicious menu and the soup of the day is always a winner.
Very close by is Lake Hayes. I occasionally went running around the 8km loop track. It is truly breathtaking, and makes the run a little bit more enjoyable! Afterwards, I’d sneak a shower at Millbrook, the golf resort Sorcha works at. It’s plush.
Sorcha and I also ate at Slow Cuts in Arrowtown. Sorch had been dying to try the buttermilk fired chicken burger and it really lived up to the hype. She was a happy bunny.
We washed our food down with one of Patagonia Chocolates famous hot chocolates and went on a walk along one of the many Arrowtown trails. You are still allowed to pan for gold in the river and we saw quite a few people trying their luck!
The final time I visited Arrowtown was to go to the boutique Dorothy Browns cinema with Sorch and Lorraine. It only has two screens and you can watch your film with wine and a cheese platter! What more could you want!
Post-cinema we went for some more drinks. The Fork and Tap is a good place to start and has a great vibe. Since it was a Wednesday night, there was live music on at Blue Door. So we ended the night there, which was great fun.
