Glenorchy

Glenorchy is a 45 minute drive from Queenstown and is gorgeous. Well worth a day trip or even half day trip.

Hitching is very common and safe in New Zealand. I know what you’re thinking, really? But it is. In Queenstown there are specific spots where you stand and people know you need a lift up to Fernhill or Goldfield Heights and so on. So, I went to the hitch spot for Glenorchy. A couple of rejections and then a lovely couple from Tasmania picked me up!

One of the best parts of going to Glenorchy is the drive there! It’s so scenic, in fact it is renowned as one of the top 8 scenic drives in the world!

Once we arrived, the couple who gave me a lift were off horse riding! Meanwhile, I went for some lunch at G.Y.C. I sat outside in the glorious sun and enjoyed the view.

Glenorchy is a small settlement at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu and is full of hiking trails. With a full tummy I decided to take the Glenorchy Walkway. The track took me over a beautiful wetland with birds everywhere and the mountains surrounding me gave a Lord of The Rings feel again! I put some music on and felt very zen.

It was also Glenorchy Getaway Day the day I was there! Outside Mrs Woolly’s General store were a variety of market stalls, live talks, and activities. It was so cute.

I actually got a lift back with a woman called Sarah who was selling jade stone at the market on behalf of her mother. She was so interesting! She used to work on super yachts and hosts luxury houses in New Zealand, last month she hosted Tom Cruise and the Biebs! Due to my vapid obsession with celebrities I was very impressed!
